Short answer

Milk feeds, safe sleep and growth checks are the priorities in the first weeks. Everyday interaction supports early play. This guide translates French health guidance; check schedules vary by country, so follow your local healthcare team.

  • Breast milk or infant formula remains the food before solids begin.
  • Start every sleep on the back in a suitable cot.
  • France schedules a health check during the second week.

At 1 week: milk feeds and early follow-up

Offer milk according to your baby’s needs and the instructions given at discharge. Feeding patterns vary. A shared log passes on feed times, diaper changes and observations rather than imposing the same schedule on every baby.

The French schedule includes a check within eight days of birth and another during the second week. Check the appointments in the health record. You can raise questions about feeds or growth between scheduled visits.

At 2 weeks: prepare useful questions

The second-week visit reviews growth and feeding, among other topics. Bring the health record, feeding information and your questions. If the visit has not happened, contact the doctor or child health service to arrange it.

Do not wait for another calendar badge to discuss difficult feeds or tiredness that worries you. The professional following your baby can adapt advice, especially after premature birth.

Safe sleep from birth

Place your baby flat on their back for nighttime sleep and every nap. Use their own cot, a firm mattress that fits and a suitable sleep sack. Keep pillows, blankets, duvets and objects that could obstruct breathing out of the cot.

A sofa, armchair or infant car seat is not a substitute for the cot. Do not add positioning devices to hold your baby in place. Explain the same sleep rules to anyone taking over care.

At 3 weeks: brief, supervised awake moments

Talk face to face, sing or describe a diaper change. Pause after a sound. If your baby turns away or becomes unsettled, stop the exchange and respond to their needs.

Short tummy-time moments can start in the first weeks while your baby is awake and constantly supervised. At first, your chest can be a place to try if you are fully awake. Build up as tolerated; always return to the back position for sleep.

Arrange rest and a handover

Decide who can take over when you are tired. Pass on recent feeds and diaper changes so the next caregiver has useful information. Caregiver recovery is part of organising care.

Biberon’s age badge records a calendar date. It does not grade care or development. Reopen the badge to read advice; feeds and diaper changes remain in the journal.
